Tarot can be a great tool for direction and thanksgiving at Christmas time. Some people are crazy for Christmas, some use it as a time for thought and reflection, some put a religious slant onto it whilst others celebrate the pre- Judeo Christian festival of Yule as our ancestors would have done. I'm personally not feeling too much Christmas spirit at the moment. It doesn't tend to happen every year for me. It depends on what's going on in my life and what there is to think about.. But whatever Christmas means to us, it is undeniably a time to reflect on the year that lies behind us and make some decisions about the future. So, how can we combine Tarot with the themes and meaning of the season and get accurate, beneficial readings for ourselves and others? Here are some ideas to get you in the mood to make Tarot into a truly festive experience.
Be still. Meditating on the meanings of the cards is wholly appropriate at this time of year. From this point onwards the days will begin to lengthen and subtle changes will occur to make us feel rejuvenated and energised. Take quiet moments of solace to think on what the cards have to tell you and bring forth some of the new wisdom you've acquired over the past twelve months to use in practical ways in your life.
Get together with loved ones. Organising a Tarot evening would be perfect to get into the spirit of Yule. This season is all about coming together, wishing each other well and exchanging gifts. Generosity, openness and empathy should be encouraged. Group activities are a great way of welcoming the end of the year.
Get creative. Designing your own deck or writing a guide book or blog about Tarot would fill the Yule experience with a sense of productivity and the birth of the new year. You could design and make a bag or box for your deck or make a special, sacred space to do readings. Start as you mean to go on by investing your energy into worthwhile projects and enjoying the fruits of your labour.
Choose your future direction. Design a spread that takes you through the new year step by step, month by month. Ask the cards what your key pieces of advice should be, what to look out for and what to expect. Think deeply on your ambitions and desires for 2012. See what the cards reveal for the next phase of your life.
